Classically, refractive laser surgery is performed in two stages. During the first stage, the physician will create a corneal flap or remove the epithelial layer of the cornea. During the second stage, the laser will reshape the surface of the cornea according to a patient’s specific measurements.
Prior to surgery, thorough and rigorous compatibility testing, that lasts approximately three hours, is crucial for determining a candidate's suitability. Only 70% of candidates for surgery are suitable. Several patients that are not appropriate have other options available, such as intraocular lens implants.
Refractive laser surgery is indicated for individuals over 18 years of age, have a stable prescription for six months prior to compatibility testing, that are myopic, hyperopic and/or suffer from astigmatism. Visual impairments that can be treated are nearsightedness - myopia (indicated by -), farsightedness – hyperopia (indicated by +), astigmatism (indicated by an angle), and/or presbyopia (indicated by +).
There may be side effects following refractive laser surgery that include dry eyes and visual quality disturbances (such as blurred vision and glare). These symptoms are temporary and usually dissipate within a few weeks.
